Visiting author Candace Austin's blog today

Hi, everyone! I'm visiting author Candace Austin's blog. Her debut novel, The Layers, is a fantastic read with the premise that many people have lived past lives... and remember them. So she asked me who I would have been, if I'd lived a past life, as well as who my main character would have been.

Raising funds for diabetes research

Today, May 28, I'm joining a bunch of author friends to raise funds for diabetes research. We've banded together and donated a Kindle Paperwhite preloaded with more than 40 of our books, and a wall charger, to Brenda Novak’s Online Auction for Diabetes Research. In addition, other authors have set up a gift certificate giveaway. This drawing, conducted through Rafflecopter, is giving away $70 in Amazon gift certificates. Plus, we're doing a blog hop, and some authors are even giving out prizes on their own blogs! It's an e-book bonanza!

Diabetes research is important to me. My grandfather had the disease, and I see people in my life deal with diabetes every day.

Birthday Cake Fiasco (Birthday Book Blast)

At the moment, I do not believe in purchasing store-bought birthday cake for my sons. Like other parenting beliefs that have changed for me (I once firmly believed I’d never let my sons watch television before a certain age, eat ice cream before breakfast, etc.), I’m sure my dedication to baking and decorating my sons’ cakes will flip-flop. Especially since the store-bought cakes always taste and appear so much better than the ones I fashion.

Take for instance my latest birthday cake-baking fiasco. My son was turning 4 and requested a cello birthday cake. We've been watching/listening to a lot of Piano Guys music. (Below is a video of his favorite song by the group. My favorite is Peponi.) My son - when the song comes on - he sticks up his finger and pretends it’s a bow and plays along to the song: classical musician-in-training.

Anyhow… back to the cello birthday cake. My plan was to make a dozen cello cupcakes. I could envision them perfectly in my mind. Brown cello-shaped chocolate icing on a white, creamy, vanilla background, with a piece of licorice for the fingerboard. While (this time) the cupcakes didn't burn – or stick to the paper cupcake wrappers (a first) – the chocolate icing ended up looking not so much like cellos but instead like brown blobs… the chocolate icing appeared more like the puppy droppings I've been busy scooping lately than musical instruments. (We ate the cupcakes anyway.)

One day, I’ll give up the tradition and purchase one of those tasty ice cream cakes, or fork over the cash for the fancy/pretty store-bought cakes. But for now, even if the cakes look frightful and sometimes don’t taste quite right, I still enjoy doing something for my boys. I can’t exactly explain why I feel compelled to make my own cakes. Maybe it has something to do with showing (either them or more likely myself) that my boys are worth my time, my effort. (?) Besides, spending an hour or two fashioning culinary disasters year after year is kind of fun, like conducting an awful science experiment.

So now about the Birthday Blast contest and authors! The prize is an $80 Visa gift card! Simply enter the contest using the Rafflecopter form below. The contest runs Friday-Sunday. Visit other authors' sites (also listed below). You can enter the contest on each author's site! Good luck!

But that’s not the only source of conflict in the developing relationship. Why doesn't Keith want Jade applying to carry a concealed handgun? Will Keith convince Jade to scrap her application, or will Keith’s mind change as Jade’s investigation takes a deadly twist?

Apology from Aruba

I'm writing today to express an apology from Aruba. No, I'm not in Aruba, but that's where my mind is! As a Christmas present, my family was given a trip to Aruba, and we enjoyed spending New Year's on the warm, breezy island. (That's me and my husband, enjoying the national park and the rugged, rocky shore.)

We snorkeled, relaxed beside the bright blue waters, took a rugged tour of the island's undeveloped side, ate the best fish dish I've ever tasted, zipped down waterslides, feed food to iguanas, soaked in the culture (fireworks = "klap" in Aruba), went parasailing, saw a double rainbow in vivid colors...

And now I'm bustling to catch up and finish another draft of my novel before our new puppy arrives... NEXT WEEK!

Please forgive me for not being as active on my blog or social media sites as I'd like! I'll be sure to post puppy photos soon.

Like the blog says, cozy mysteries *crazy* life!

Oh, and "bon ana," a little late!

Warm up your winter!

Is anyone else cold? It's in the 60s here in North Carolina, but I feel cold... and I do so despise feeling cold! One of the ways I distract myself from the chilly weather is by losing myself in a good read. But where can we find that good read? Thankfully, the team of authors I participate in is holding a two-day event: It's the Beach Book Blast Warm Winter Reads, and we've got a TON of great ebooks priced to sell! Come check out our website at

While you're at the Book Blast website, surf around for books (including Private Deception by yours truly) and enter the Rafflecopter contest for your chance to win the grand prize of a $50 Best Buy gift certificate (perfect for purchasing e-reader add-ons like a swanky e-reader cover) and a $25 gift certificate to a major e-book seller of your choice (Amazon, B&N or iTunes). The second place prize is a $25 Amazon gift certificate: not too shabby, either!

Also, drop by the participating authors' websites and blogs (see the list below) as many of the authors are also offering prizes on their individual sites.
