The first really good fiction I’ve read this year

Yes! I just finished a fantastic book: The River King, by Alice Hoffman. Something about the combination of lyrical prose and intriguing characters and conflict. Oh, the conflict – the kind that sucks you under so thoroughly you can’t hear your own children talking to you while you’re in the middle of reading it until they yell “Mommy!” and you surface for air… It’s the story of the people of a town and its private school -- the interconnected personal “collisions” between so many different characters, with murder and mystery and (dare I say it?) magic that Hoffman seems to indicate can be found if we pause enough, or open our eyes enough, and view life from a particular perspective.
